How to obtain Apostille of certified copies of documents from the NARA?

Updated: Feb 18

What is NARA?

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the nation's record keeper. Of all documents and materials created in the course of business conducted by the United States Federal government, only 1%-3% are so important for legal or historical reasons that they are kept by NARA forever.

Those valuable records are preserved and are available to you, whether you want to see if they contain clues about your family's history, need to prove a veteran's military service, or are researching a historical topic that interests you.

What are the types of certified copies issued by NARA?

  • Naturalization Records

  • Immigration Records

  • Visa Records

  • Court Records

  • Alien Files (A-Files)

  • Passport Records

  • Passenger Arrival Records

  • Tax Records

  • Vital Records

  • Bankruptcy Case Files

  • Declaration of Intention

  • Certificate of Arrival

  • Oath of Allegiance

  • Military Service Records

  • Federal Court Records Older than 15 Years

What does a certified copy issued by the NARA look like?

How to Apostille or Authenticate the NARA documents?

If these documents are destined for use in countries outside of the U.S., an apostille or authentication is required. The U.S. Department of State has the authorization to issue an apostille of a copy of a document certified by NARA.

Step 1. Order the Apostille or Authentication service based on the destination country.

  • If the destination country requiring the document is one of the Hague Apostille countries, then, the document is ready for use, no further authentication steps are needed.

  • If the destination country requiring the document is one of the Non-Hague Apostille countries, the subsequent process is needed. You should request an Authentication from the foreign embassies located in D.C.

Step 2. Mail us the original certified copy of your document issued by the NARA.

Mail it to the address below for further processing (with your order#).
